Basic Rights in Special Education: Evaluation and Eligibility

All of our Basic Rights workshops provide foundational information on the rights of families under state and federal special education laws. A comprehensive introduction to special education laws and procedure:
- purpose of the law,
- when and how to make a referral,
- evaluations,
- the Team meeting process,
- standards for determining eligibility,
- services and placement,
- what to do if the team decides the student is not eligible,
- what happens after the close of the Team meeting,
- parent’s response options to an IEP, and
- procedural due process rights for resolving disputes.

Are you interested in how students with disabilities are integrated into regular education classrooms? Hear from the elementary educators about the various strategies, opportunities and supports utilized to make integration successful.

Describes how to be an effective communicator, why effective communication with the school is important, summarizes the methods of communication, how to establish effective communication with the school and parent’s procedural due process rights for resolving disputes.

This workshop discusses the laws and protections for students concerning school behavior and conduct.
Workshop Objectives:
• Identify the Shift in Student Discipline Laws from Zero Tolerance to Safe and Supportive Schools
• Summarize District's Behavioral Expectations
• Identify Legal Protections for Students on IEPs and 504 Plans
• Clarify Different Between Suspensions, Expulsions and Emergency Removals
• Describe Out-of-School Suspension
• Explain Limits on Use of Restraints
